Project Description
Aldrich Public Library
Addition
Barre, Vermont
The Aldrich Public Library is on the National Register of Historic Places and is located in the center of Barre directly across the park from City Hall. This addition to the rear of the building more than doubled the size of the library and importantly provided ADA access to all three levels of the original building and addition via the added elevator. Care was taken to preserve the exterior of the building and incorporate it into the adjacent added space.
Delivery method: Negotiated Construction Management
Completed: July 2000
Architect: Northern Architects
Unique attributes:
This project required a high degree of collaborative pre-construction support via value engineering and budgeting to accommodate historic preservation and funding requirements. The construction phase was coordinated so as to minimize impacts to public access and library operations, as the library remained open throughout construction. The lower level of the addition includes an open area community room available for meetings, exhibits, and many other activities and uses.
