Project Description

Roxbury Fish Culture

Station

Roxbury, Vermont

The last of Vermont’s recovery projects from 2011’s Hurricane Irene, this was a complete modernization of Vermont’s oldest fish hatchery.  Major components include two tank pavilions, effluent treatment building, chemical effluent pond, sludge storage, UV disinfection system, and clarifier structures.  Established in 1891, the facility is listed on the National Register for Historic Places.

Delivery Method:  Lump Sum Bid

Completed:  September 2020

Owner:  State of Vermont

Architect:  HDR Engineering

Extensive site improvements, two miles of underground piping, and protecting the stream flowing through the site during construction required 24/7 sump pumping for two months.  Stainless steel stock tanks (six in each of the two pavilion buildings) have complex mechanical systems to monitor water quality to assure the health of the fish stock.  The modernized hatchery provides approximately 50,000 fish annually.
